Conclusions

  • We are a multi-racial, multi-religious country of continental dimension.
  • We have the tradition of respecting all faiths and ideologies.
  • Religion must be differentiated from religious fundamentalism.
  • The remedies lie in a combined effort by the state and the people through political consensus, economic and social measures, education & drawing clear lines between religions and ideologies & by involving varied and varying constituencies of thought and action, namely, thinkers, professionals, educators, social workers, young people, women folk, media persons, religious leaders and above all, representatives of people.
  • There is desperate need to realize that cultural, linguistic and religious pluralism is the ground reality in our country. It is the integration of this pluralism that needs to be achieved. In the ultimate analysis all religions advocate the same value systems.
